Preventing Online Fraud Through Web Session Intelligence

Finovate Spring Demonstrates a Growing Richness in Online Interactions

At Finovate Spring this week in San Francisco, there has been considerable buzz around all sorts of technologies available for financial organizations worldwide. It’s a fascinating group, from online financial advice companies to multi-party payment providers to online money movers. One thing many of them have in common: service offerings on the Web.

This raises the question: with all of these financial services and offerings online – how do organizations protect the users of their websites and defend against attacks? This is a question for all industries and all organizations that are adopting strong mobile and web-based strategies. Exploitation of websites, mobile platforms and smart phone apps are threats that are increasing in scope, regardless of what industry you are in.

The increasing richness of online interactions means that companies need to go beyond data security and properly operationalize security tools and processes. While many people may debate what tools are needed…and where…we believe that understanding context and user behavior is a key aspect to effectively responding to online threats.

Web Session Intelligence provides security to the entire end-to-end browsing session, regardless of whether a user authenticates or not. Tools that focus solely on authentication are increasingly being rendered ineffective due to the proliferation of malware on end point devices. The delivery of Web Session Intelligence is what sets Silver Tail Systems apart – so much so that Penny Crosman at American Banker named us Most Useful Product at Finovate!

The product demonstrations at Finovate are a testament to how much of our technological future is online, and this show is one of the many that Silver Tail Systems will be attending in the near future. Up next: FS-ISAC and BITS Annual Summit, and the 2012 CNP Expo. Hope to see you there!

Silver Tail Systems Unveils the Hot Topics for RSA 2011: e-Commerce Fraud and Man in the Mobile

It’s that time of year again – everyone is gearing up for the annual RSA conference.  There is a lot of discussion  about what the main areas of interest will be, but I thought I’d talk a bit about what I see as the key points.

First, I think you’ll see more focus on fraud in e-commerce.  I’m hosting a panel at the RSA eFraudNetwork on how fraud in e-commerce is similar to fraud in financial services.   Also, my panel on Tuesday afternoon will cover how authentication is being subverted for both e-commerce and financial services.

Having just returned from the FinovateEurope Conference in London, I think the second hot topic will be Man in the Mobile attacks.  Europe is already being hit by these and they are the latest threat on everyone’s radar, as evidenced in a recent report, published in PC World Magazine, on the rise of mobile gadgets and malware threats. If you get a chance, please stop by and see my presentation at the Innovation Sandbox on Monday afternoon.  It should be an interesting presentation – 3 minutes followed by 2 minutes of questions.  That will keep my on my toes!

Please drop me a line if you are planning to be at the conference and want to get together.  See you there!

Finovate gets secure!

Today was my fourth Finovate conference.  It has been interesting to see the morphing of the show and the content.

In the past couple of shows there has been an abundance of both mobile and iPad devices.  In the spring it was amazing to see iPad devices already being demo’d since the iPad had only been out for a few weeks.  There were even more today.  It’s crazy what people can do with an iPad.

This time there were a few security companies demoing.  I demo’d of course.  But also PinPoint, SecureKey, and Guardian Analytics.  It’s great to see innovation happening in the financial technology space!

Silver Tail wins Finovate Best of Show!

BestofShow_webSilver Tail is pleased to announce that we were chosen Best of Show at Finovate in New York last week!  This is in addition to our Best of Show award at Finovate Startup in April.

For those of you who don’t know, Finovate showcases hot new technology relevant to the financial sector.  Presenters at this year’s conference included Fidelity, Intuit, and Fiserv.  There were some amazing presentations which is why this award is even more flattering.

We demo’d both Forensics and Mitigation and the audience got to see not only how Man in the Browser impacts Aunt Sally, but how we can detect it and stop it.

The video of our demo isn’t posted yet, but when it is, we’ll be sure to include a link here so you can see it.

finovate-award-and-sign1

I may be guilty of blogging too fast earlier, as not only was Silver Tail selected to present on stage at the FinovateStartup09 conference in San Francisco today, but by the end of the day, Silver Tail had won the Best of Show Award! The award was voted on by the 300+ attendees at the conference, made of up mostly of financial services firms. The selection was made based on the audience interest in the solution, the compelling need in the financial services market and the presentation given at the conference. Silver Tail was selected as the winner over 57 companies participating in the conference.

Leading anti-fraud expert and company co-founder, Laura Mather, presented the Silver Tail Forensics product on stage at the conference. She highlighted a Man-in-the-Browser example, showcasing Silver Tail’s unique capability as the only commercial technology for online sites to detect this emerging threat and protect against business logic abuse.

This recognition by financial services firms underscores the need for advanced detection and disruption of online fraud on financial web sites. Online fraud attacks are only growing and getting more sophisticated, driving the need for real-time behavior analysis to detect and disrupt fraud attacks.

Company Co-Founder and VP Product Marketing, Laura Mather and Sherrick Murdoff, CEO, were present to accept the award.finovate-award-laura-and-sherrick

We want to thank John Fishback of 154 Consulting for all of his help on getting us prepped for this conference!  His expertise was invaluable!  We also want to thank Erik  from Finovate and also the audience for voting us best of show!
